Income Tax Refund Not Received? Check Status & Claim It
Filed your return and waiting for the refund? Here's how income-tax refunds work, how to check the status, and what to do if it's stuck.
a refund arises when the tax you paid (tds, advance tax, self-assessment) exceeds your actual liability. it's processed only after you file and e-verify your return, and the department reconciles it.
How to Check Your Refund Status
- log in to the income-tax e-filing portal and open 'view filed returns' to see the processing status;
- or check the 'refund/demand status' under your profile;
- the nsdl/tin refund-tracking page also shows status against your pan and assessment year.
Common Refund Statuses
| status | what it means |
|---|---|
| refund issued | credited (or on its way) to your bank account |
| refund failed | bank details wrong or account not pre-validated |
| processed with no demand/refund | your return is accepted; nothing payable either way |
| under processing | the department is still reconciling your return |
If Your Refund Is Delayed or Failed
- make sure your return is e-verified — unverified returns aren't processed;
- pre-validate your bank account and link pan with it;
- raise a 'refund reissue' request on the portal if it failed;
- check for any mismatch between your return and form 26as / ais.
Still Stuck?
refund delays usually trace back to a verification, bank-validation or mismatch issue. we identify the cause and resolve it for you.
