a refund arises when the tax you paid (tds, advance tax, self-assessment) exceeds your actual liability. it's processed only after you file and e-verify your return, and the department reconciles it.

How to Check Your Refund Status

  • log in to the income-tax e-filing portal and open 'view filed returns' to see the processing status;
  • or check the 'refund/demand status' under your profile;
  • the nsdl/tin refund-tracking page also shows status against your pan and assessment year.

Common Refund Statuses

If Your Refund Is Delayed or Failed

  • make sure your return is e-verified — unverified returns aren't processed;
  • pre-validate your bank account and link pan with it;
  • raise a 'refund reissue' request on the portal if it failed;
  • check for any mismatch between your return and form 26as / ais.

Still Stuck?
