hra exempt₹1,80,000
hra taxable₹1,20,000
least of: actual hra; rent − 10% of (basic+da); 50% (metro) / 40% (non-metro) of (basic+da). hra exemption applies under the old regime only.
What Is HRA Exemption?
house rent allowance (hra) is a common part of a salary package. if you live in rented accommodation, part of your hra is exempt from tax under section 10(13a) — but only under the old tax regime.
How the Exemption Is Calculated
the exempt portion is the least of these three amounts:
- the actual hra you receive;
- rent paid minus 10% of (basic salary + da);
- 50% of (basic + da) if you live in a metro (delhi, mumbai, kolkata, chennai), otherwise 40%.
How to Use This Calculator
- enter your annual basic + da;
- enter the hra you receive and the rent you pay;
- select metro or non-metro;
- see the exempt and taxable portions of your hra.
Old Regime Only
hra exemption is not available under the new tax regime. if you're deciding between regimes, compare both with our income tax calculator before claiming hra.
